Jeon Hyuck Lim painted The Sea and the Butterfly in May 1998, drawing solely on his creative imagination for inspiration. The motif, consisting of a horizon on the Tongyeong sea, and a butterfly to represent Mt. Mireuk, proved to be both captivating and challenging for the artist. "The painting incorporates a splash of blue in a sunny horizon, I used a very interesting shade of blue that was very hard to pull off." says Jeon Hyuck Lim.
