Master painter Hyuck Lim Jeon, a pioneer in Korean color field abstraction, developed a unique and remarkable field in the formative arts that transcends the stereotypical notion of the concrete to the abstract.

Born in 1916, he experienced the upheaval and diverse cultural changes of the modern era, and making the province (Tong-yeong) his main stage, he was the artist that raised awareness that local culture was Korean culture, and therefore, global culture. In 1938, he presented a selection of his works, primarily "Mystic Seashore" and "Moonlight", at the Busan Art Exhibition and began his career as a professional painter from that moment. Even during times of adversity, followed by the independence of the country, he established the Tong-yeong Cultural Association together with Chi-Hwan Yu, I-Sang Yun, and Chun-su Kim in 1945.

In comparison to the generally conservative inclination of local painters, he showed a determination to express tradition through modern art's avant-garde formative methods. By using various techniques, such as plane abstract painting, ceramic paintings, colored objects, and colored wooden sculptures, he created works of art that conjured up Korean folk art, thereby trying to express the joys and sorrows, and the tradition of the Korean people. He distanced himself from "central" painting circles, thought little of academic affiliation, and did not compromise with temporary vogues, but formed his own sphere of unique colors and landscape in his hometown.

Master painter Jeon's colors are powerful. His works leap over boundaries between the abstract and concrete, and between the three-dimensional and plane, maintaining a strong consistency in color. This is due to the harmony of five vivid Korean colors of orange, blue, white, red and black. In some works, the colors are rough and simple, but they manage to go beyond locality because of the root of the colors that he uses are colors that have been handed down from generation to generation among the Korean people. Such colors are called the "craftsmanship of no craftsmanship", commonly found in Korean folk paintings which are based on the lives of native Korean people.

In particular, his earlier works go beyond the external shape of the concrete in a search for their formative elements. This is in line with the return of all objects into circles, cylinders and cones in search of the fundamental elements. The world of abstract based on the concrete is the composition of split screen, Korean folk paintings alteration and of the dismantling of landscapes. They are composed of elements that do not ignore their natural form but hovering in the middle of the concrete and the non-concrete.

In addition, his ceramic paintings are similar to paintings on ceramic ware but they do not fit in with the decorative arts for plates and dishes, and the ceramics themselves are like paintings. Here, he uses carving, bratticing and raised carving techniques to reconcile paintings and ceramics, and make it three-dimensional by emphasizing pictorial elements. The color of the painting on the texture of crude earthenware maintains the organic relationship between bold patterns and ceramic ware, creating an exceptional break from traditional ceramic art.
